Of all the words we’d use to describe our current situation, joyful probably isn’t one of them. At least not often.
..when we’re low it can be really hard to decide to do anything to cheer ourselves up. So having a set routine takes some of the decision making out of the mix and makes it much more likely you’ll actually do it
With our ability to engage in most activities that induce joy drastically limited, the onus lands very much on us to create joy within the confines of our lockdown lives.
So for this week’s blog, I thought I’d share an easy step by step process to create a joy routine for yourself. And if you’re wondering why on earth you’d need a joy routine, the answer is simple: when we’re low it can be really hard to decide to do anything to cheer ourselves up. So having a set routine takes some of the decision making out of the mix and makes it much more likely you’ll actually do it. So here we go:
Step One
Write a list of all the simple activities that make you feel good. For example, going for a walk, yoga, running, dancing, drinking hot chocolate, putting on a face mask (the fun, spa-like kind).
Step Two
Think about where your self-talk and behaviour patterns go in your blue moments. Are you fretting about getting everything done and really amped up? Are you self doubting and lethargic? Take some time to observe and identify this.
Step Three
Devise a writing exercise to combat your particular pattern. For example, if you become full of self-doubt, write a list of everything that makes you unique and great (no-one else ever has to see it so don’t be embarrassed), or if you find yourself lamenting everything you’re missing out on, write a list of 5-10 things you’re grateful for right now.
Step Four
Assemble your routine from the activities you wrote down and the writing exercises. I always recommend adding some simple deep breathing before starting as this will calm your nervous system.
If you know you experience low moments very differently day to day, try creating a few different routines you can choose from to bring you back into balance and joy.
